Things to Consider when Buying a RIS and PACS

•  The RIS system is critical to radiology workflow. RIS runs the radiology department and communicates with the enterprise.

•  Major productivity improvements arise from efficient and accurate enterprise scheduling. A well-designed scheduling system in radiology will drive additional exams with little or no extra expense.

•  Key to a good operating radiology information system is a well-planned, efficient implementation project. According to computer industry analysts over 30% of computer implementations do not meet their intended strategic objectives.

•  A well-organized, user involved implementation will provide better workflow, with fewer steps, mistakes and errors in handling and managing patient data. Information is handled only once and the required information converges from multiple computer network sources.

•  Improvements in staff efficiency lead to faster examinations, rapid report turnaround, fewer repeat rates and a significant reduction in lost or unread films. A well integrated radiology information and PACS system improves productivity without increases in staff.

•  An integrated radiology information and PACS system will improve teaching file systems.

•  Increases in clinical efficiency are realized when timelier clinical information is available to radiologists, caregivers, specialists and referring physicians.

•  From a financial perspective, the benefits derived from an integrated RIS and PACS relate directly to reductions in both film related costs and revenue losses due to missing films and unread procedures resulting in medical legal issues.

•  Improved workflow contributes to faster report turnaround, shorter billing cycles and more accurate billing information. A good business workflow and efficient clinical workflow go hand-in-hand for ensuring the radiology department is accurately reimbursed.

•  Favorable report turnaround times, accurate image and report data to referring physicians can provide improved market share in a local market region.

•  The purchase of truly integrated RIS/PACS allows for more accurate cost estimates and analysis including the hardware, software, network configurations, maintenance, service and system upgrade planning.

•  A radiology department's greatest benefit comes from an integrated RIS/PACS acquisition where the products are seamlessly integrated into a single solution, enabling enhanced workflow, reduction of duplication and economies of scale and productivity.
